What is Individuality? The dictionary defines it as;
- the quality or character of a particular person or thing that distinguishes them from others of the same kind, especially when strongly marked.
- separate existence.
Why has it been watered down in our society? Why does everyone like the same things, have the same hobbies, wear the same style of clothes and make the same hair? Popular culture isn’t just popular anymore, using the words inspired by Justin Hunte; glorious diversity has been swallowed and repackaged as a monolithic behemoth representing little more than club themes, soccer, politically correct content, singing competitions, and other shallow content.
Has it always been like this? there was more diversity in the 80s if I remember correctly.
By the way, I’m not complaining about the way things have changed, I’m just calling to embrace different interests and encourage diversity, thus strengthening character and tolerance in such a culturally diverse universe.
Yes, it is normal for the majority of a population to lean more towards some ideas than others, but some fields and ideas require deeper than normal interests before they can be embraced. Popular culture isn’t a bad thing, but how much of a society should be built on popular culture? How few options should be available for aspiring connoisseurs, individuals, and businesses with deeper interests than the average person?
Why is individuality so important? Why is it needed for growth and rich experiences?

Similarly, a strong sense of individuality means not being swayed by the fears or doubts of others. Those with a true sense of individuality are able to weigh potential risks and benefits for themselves, without considering what may be commonly accepted or unaccepted in society. Individuality also encourages others to try more innovative approaches.
Those who see the success of an individual with a unique idea are often inspired to pursue their own endeavors. Individuality equates to a sense of leadership in this way. Society’s most-influential members are commonly those with truly unique and individual perspectives.
Finally, individuality allows people to have a clearer sense of what they need to be happy. Rather than adhering to notions of happiness constructed by society, individuals pursue true joy in whatever form it may take.”
The quoted text is from an unknown writer who I agree with. One directional thinking keeps societies redundant, through a lack of creativity and conforming to what already is. Without individuality there wouldn’t be innovation, we might still be living in caves, and there wouldn’t be technology or art. Individuality is the driver of evolution, society is constantly evolving and it is all due to individuality.
Most of the issues in this society stem from a lack of individuality, which also leads to a shortage of authentic leaders.
Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”
It is important to build up individuals, that practice would increase creativity, innovation, leadership, happiness and so many other integral qualities for a fulfilling life. We should encourage individuality, by investing in programs that promote it.
